MEET THE INSTRUCTOR
Instrutora Sereia (Jennifer Walsh) is the top ranked female foreign capoeirista in ABADÁ-Capoeira worldwide. She has been involved with dance, fitness, and martial arts for over twenty years and has been working as a professional athlete and artist for the past ten years. Prior to capoeira she was a ballet dancer and was involved with rock climbing and strength training. She started her capoeira training in 1994, with ABADA-Capoeira’s legendary top ranked female capoeirista, Mestranda Márcia “Cigarra” in San Francisco, California.
She has competed several times in Brazil in the International ABADÁ World Games, winning 2nd place Best Female, 3rd place Best Foreign Competitor, and 1st place overall in her level. She consistently travels as a guest artist and competitor to various places including Brazil, Mexico City, San Francisco, New York City, and Washington DC.
In 2003, she became the first female non-Brazilian practitioner ever to be given the title of “Instrutora”- a title shared by only a handful of Brazilians. In August of 2007, at the International ABADÁ-Capoeira Conference in Brazil, she made history again and was the first ever non-Brazilian female to receive her purple/brown cord— making her a prominent leader in the art and an important role model as capoeira gains popularity within Brazil and abroad.
In 1995, she joined forces with Mestranda Márcia and became the Co- Founder and Executive Director of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco. As the Executive Director she has been extremely dedicated- creating, implementing, and overseeing all operations of the organization.
In addition to her job co-directing ACSF, she maintains a demanding schedule teaching, performing, and competing in capoeira. She has extensive experience teaching youth and adults of all ages and backgrounds, as well as experience directing and leading performances. She employs her background and knowledge of fitness, nutrition, and movement to all levels of her work with capoeira, bringing her students a comprehensive experience.
Instrutora Sereia recently re-located to Boston where she is now teaching both youth and adults, working to create an organization modeled after ACSF.
